Every parent learns to live with a certain amount of childhood sniffles, scrapes and tummy upsets. The challenge is knowing which symptoms are routine and which need a doctor's eyes. Here are signs that should prompt a paediatric consultation rather than home remedies.
Book a consultation soon if you notice
- Fever lasting more than 2–3 days, or any fever in a baby under 3 months
- Fast breathing, wheezing, or ribs pulling in while breathing
- Poor feeding, fewer wet nappies, or signs of dehydration
- Rash that spreads quickly or doesn't fade when pressed
- Ear pain, persistent crying or unusual sleepiness
- Diarrhoea or vomiting that prevents keeping fluids down
- Weight or height not tracking along expected growth lines
- Recurrent infections — frequent colds, wheeze or skin infections
- Developmental concerns: delayed speech, walking or social response
- Any symptom that simply feels wrong to you as a parent
When it's an emergency
Breathing difficulty with bluish lips, a seizure, unresponsiveness, a stiff neck with fever, or a serious injury need emergency care immediately — call an ambulance (108/102) and inform the clinic while on the way.
What helps the doctor help your child
Note when symptoms started, the highest temperature recorded, medicines already given (with doses), feeding and urine output, and bring the vaccination card. These details let the paediatrician make faster, safer decisions.
